Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as one of the main sources of malodor, not only affects residents’ health living nearby due to toxicity but also leads to erosion of the structure of the urban drainage piping systems and it is a basis for serious air pollution. Odor problems caused by hydrogen sulphide have been treated using a hydrogel produced by sol-gel technology. While Tetraethylorthosilicate, water and nitric acid were used as primary chemicals for this hydrogel, several other inhibitors and bactericides have been added to the gel in order to make the gel function properly. Optimizing the multi-functional hydrogel formulation which can treat malodor due to H2S and scaling up the reactor which produce the gel as a continuous system will allow producing more efficient and effective hydrogel for malodor problems. In this study, the main focus was to analyze the thermodynamic conditions and gelation of the process in order to optimize the process for continuous production system in large scale.
